Rio loves soccer more than anything in the world. But he's the smallest kid on the team. Everyone else's jersey fits just right — Rio's hangs past his knees. "He'll be on the bench again," someone whispers. Rio pretends not to hear.

Every day after school, Rio practices alone. Kicking, catching, diving. The sunset field belongs to no one but Rio. "Someday, in front of everyone." Rio hugs the ball tight.

The day of the big match arrives. Rio sits on the bench, watching his teammates play. They're all so amazing. Rio's feet itch to run. But Coach doesn't look his way.

Oh no! Takuya, the goalkeeper, trips and grabs his ankle. "It hurts…" Coach turns around. Looks at the bench. His eyes meet Rio's. "Rio, you're in."

Rio pulls on Takuya's big gloves. Way too large — his fingers swim inside them. His heart is pounding. Scared, but happy. "Finally… it's my turn." Rio walks toward the goal.

The score is tied. The other team gets a penalty kick. Standing in front of the goal, Rio looks truly tiny. Their number 9 places the ball on the spot. The crowd goes silent. Rio gulps.

Number 9 runs up. The foot swings back. The ball is flying — ! Time slows down for Rio.
